Network in your scientific community and exchange ideas with your peers. In addition to information and community, many networks also give you the chance to influence the conditions and circumstances of the various phases of scientific careers.

As an official body anchored in the Higher Education Act, the DoV is elected every two years by the doctoral candidates of all JGU faculties.
The DoV supports you with doctoral-related questions and represents the interests of doctoral candidates in JGU committees.
The DoV regularly organizes an open get-to-know-you table at the Baron on campus, where you can network and exchange ideas with other doctoral candidates.

My name is Xenia Heilmann and I have been doing my doctorate at the Institute of Computer Science since October 2022. Here I am working on methods and ideas on how to make artificial intelligence, specifically machine learning algorithms, more fair and more private. I am pleased to be part of the current DoV and hope to promote and strengthen networking, exchange and communication between doctoral candidates – both within the faculty and across departments.

My name is Daniela Fetzer and I am doing my doctorate in physics. Since 2023, I have been working in the group of Prof. Dr. Michael Wurm on the constriction of a new experiment at the Center for Fundamental Physics here in Mainz. As the successor of David Maksimovic in the DoV, I am only joining in the last six months of the current term of office. Nevertheless, I am delighted to now be part of the PhD representatives and will do my best to actively contribute to the tasks at hand.

Faculty 09 is currently represented by Moritz Johannes Förster (left), Alexander Christopher Fischer (center) and Henriette Kolbinger (right).

All three are doing their doctorates in chemistry and are actively involved in the interests of doctoral students in their faculty.
Alexander is researching sustainable luminescent metal complexes in Prof. Dr. Katja Heinze’s working group. His involvement in the DoV aims to give doctoral students a strong voice and make their interests visible.
Moritz, also a member of the Heinze group, is working on the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer processes (PCET) in coordination compounds. Within the DoV, he is committed to improving networking among doctoral students and would like to strengthen communication within the department. He also represents the FB09 doctoral students on the department council.
Henriette is doing her doctorate in Prof. Dr. Streb’s group on light-driven hydrogen production. She is particularly responsible for public relations at the DoV and pursues the goal of increasing the visibility of the representation and facilitating cooperation within the Rhine-Main Universities (RMU).
The three representatives work together to improve the situation of doctoral students at FB 09, promote exchange formats and represent the interests of early career researchers within and outside the university.

My name is Baris Cakilkaya and I have started my PhD journey in September 2022 under the supervision of Prof. Eva Wolf, focusing on circadian rhythm in the Department of Biology (FB10).

As a PhD representative, I am dedicated to supporting fellow PhD students and addressing the challenges they face on their journey. Being an international PhD student myself, I am particularly passionate about improving the experience for non-German speakers. To achieve this, we collaborate closely with the university to create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for international researchers.

I work on get to know tables where we meet with PhD students once a month and talk about their preferred topic and socialize. Public outreach is another important part of our duty that I also have involved various poster preparation.

I am happy to be part of the PhD Representative team, where everyone is committed to making life better for their colleagues.

Everyone can contribute as much or as little as they like.

JUGGLE is a self-organized initiative by and for advanced postdocs, junior group leaders and junior professors in Mainz. It serves as a platform for interdisciplinary exchange, peer support, and community building across faculties.

Would you like to stay up to date and network with other ECRs? Subscribe to the JUGGLE mailing list:

We, Ann Kathrin and Michael, are the representatives for the junior professors at JGU. Our main task is to organize the annual meeting of the junior professors with the university president. In general, we represent the interests of the junior professors and collect concerns that they have towards the university, but we are also a point of contact for organizational issues that arise in the life of junior professors.

We are available to you as contact persons and look forward to your participation in the meetings.

New as a junior professor at JGU? Get in touch with us and we will add you to our contact list.

Ann Kathrin’s Professional background:
Evolutionary biology, genomics, transcriptomics, sex determination systems.

Michael’s professional background:
Statistical physics, soft and biological matter, philosophy of physics.

From workshops and talks to social events.
General career development as well as subject-specific offers.

To support our ECRs, it is important to us to promote the networking of people who are in direct contact with our ECRs. These include representatives of initiatives, coordinators of collaborative projects, members of graduate schools and similar.

We are therefore in regular contact with those involved in ECR support at JGU and surrounding institutes.

If you are not yet a member of the group, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to welcoming you to the group (natlife@uni-mainz.de).
